Rosslyn Chapel Cymatic Motet

The many carvings around the Rosslyn Chapel just outside of Edinburgh, Scotland intrigued me when I visited the Chapel in 2000. Now it seems that they are not only beautiful but also have a hidden message of sound. A father and son became fascinated by the symbols carved into the chapel's arches and say they have deciphered a musical score encrypted in them.

"The music has been frozen in time by symbolism," Mitchell said on his Web site external link, which details the 27-year project to crack the chapel's code.

The Mitchell's unlocked a beautiful hidden melody contained within the intricate carvings by connecting them to cymatic patterns, sometimes referred to as Chladni patterns. The Mitchell's have called the piece The Rosslyn Motet and added words from a contemporary hymn to complete it.

I am thrilled about the research confirming the meaning behind the patterns. If the song has now been interpreted who is to say what else may be uncovered. The Apprentice Pillar, where some of the symbols are carved, has DNA like imagery encircling the supporting column. Perhaps there is an even more powerful message of healing that is encoded within the music symbols. I look forward to the next step of discovery.

To read more about the Mitchell's, read this article posted on CNN http://www.cnn.com/2007/WORLD/europe/05/01/davinci.feature.reut/index.html

Positive Quotes

With a strong belief that what we choose to read or listen to has a positive or negative affect on our well-being, from listening to music that uplifts, or using sound intruments for healing, such as the Cyma 1000 or Tuning Forks, or reading inspirational books, I made the decision a few years back that when I had a choice I would allow into my life suportive, positive and uplifting information. One choice I made was to stop my subscription to cable television and sign up for Dave Boufford's Positive News email. I always feel a lift in my vibration each time I open that email... here is a sample of daily quotes ...

LOVE/RELATIONSHIPS:
I want love, because love is the best feeling
in the whole world. --Fairuza Balk

LEADERSHIP/SUCCESS:
The key to successful leadership today is
influence, not authority. --Ken Blanchard

MOTIVATION/INSPIRATION:
Faith is taking the first step even when
you don't see the whole staircase.
--Martin Luther King, Jr.

Two in a Million

I appear to be enamored with Valentines Day! A dear friend sent this to me and I just had to add it to my posts. The power of love can be healing, and research by the HeartMath Institute has shown that when you express emotion, and love is a good emotion to express, it not only positively changes the DNA of those within your immediate space, it also affects those in the next room and up to 50 miles! Doesn't that make you feel good all over. Here is a story of love I though you might enjoy on this special day.

"Whether you've got romance in your life right
now or not, I think you'll be moved by this seven
minute story. Open the following link, hit listen
(just above Danny and Annie's wedding photo)
and enjoy."

A Great Little Dessert Treat to Sweeten Your Valentine

Heavenly Pie

Here's a little treat to celebrate St Valentines Day. It’s a dessert that is super yummy and so easy to make and no cooking is involved. Great for the any season!

For those of you on a serious "New Year Resolution" diet DO NOT read on!!

For the rest of us check this out:

Ingredients:
1 Can Sweetened Condensed Milk (try to get the thickest one available)
Juice of 1 lemon (to taste)
3 or 4 Fresh Passionfruit (or in a can if you really have to)
1 Large fresh Banana (sliced)
Preparation:

Mix everything together and cool in refrigerator. Soooo simple!!

You can put this in a large pie case, or in many small ones before you put it in the refrigerator. Or you can place the cooled mixture in a pie case immediately before you serve it. It is also great on its own, or just with some fresh fruit. You can double up (or more) on the ingredients for larger amounts. The lemon juice stops the banana from going brown, as well as reducing the sweetness of the condensed milk.

Or you can serve it in a dish as in the photo.

Use your imagination and put other things in as well such as strawberries, mango, nuts (unsalted) and even chunks of chocolate. Woooooow! Maybe even a cordial. Go wild, experiment, or just stick to the original formula.

Sprinkle something on top and serve by itself, or with whipped cream or ice cream.

Then go for a walk!!!

The kids (big and small) will love it.

Enjoy,

Vera Gadman

Yes - it’s that time of year again when the whole world goes love-crazy!
For 364 days we forget to show our loved ones how much we care about them, and on February 14th we expect a dozen roses or another gift will make it okay.
It's wonderful to let someone know you care with flowers or candy or a special gift… here are a few websites to help.
http://www.Teleflora.com
http://vtbear.stores.yahoo.net/valentines-day-gifts-ideas.html
http://www.godiva.com/

But I agree with Andrea Maflin, interior designer & TV presenter.
"Every day should be Valentine’s Day in my view. We all work far too hard and it’s so important to take time out for each other. Creating a romantic atmosphere is essential for Valentine’s Day. Dim the lights or have just a few lamps on, then light some candles, perhaps one being the scented variety. If you have a working fire that really is the ultimate, with it’s hypnotic qualities of flickering light and sounds is fabulously pleasing, especially with a glass of wine and soft music in the background. OH and turn off the phone!"

Here is one wonderful idea that will last all year!
Cut out 365 pink, red and white hearts from copy paper, place a special message on each one...
Date notes: movie of your choice, dinner out, dinner fixed by me, a drive to the beach, etc.
Chore or help notes: I do the dishes for a week, I'll clean the bathrooms, I'll watch the baby this weekend, etc.
Sweet nothings: back rub, take a long bath, take a nap while I take the baby, let's look at our wedding photos and reminisce...
Go to the web for love quotes if you run out of messages.

Once all the hearts have a message, fold each one and place in a large jar decorated with appropriate Valentine's colors and shapes. Wrap it as a special gift, and when opened, place it on the counter where he/she can reach for each day's note, to be used at his/her discretion.

This is a simple yet wonderful way to say You Are My Valentine all year long.

New Instrument Reveals Geometric Formations in Sound

Sound is invisible, right? Not any more. Each sound actually creates a unique geometric pattern as beautiful as a snowflake. A new scientific instrument, the CymaScope™, captures this beauty by making sound visible. Sounds are sent through a digital compressor and audio filters and then imprinted on a thin membrane, allowing the invisible world of sound to be seen.

Children and adults alike are fascinated when they see sound materialized on the CymaScope. “Look Daddy, my voice looks like a star!” But it isn’t only the human voice that can be made visible. Bird song, whale song, wild animal sounds and music all create unique sound prints, or “CymaGlyphs” as they are now known.

The special magic of the CymaScope was invented and developed by English acoustics engineer and researcher, John Stuart Reid of Sonic Age America. “For the first time, everybody, not just scientists and specialized researchers, can see sound as it creates its own kaleidoscopic-like pattern. Just as great advances in medical science were made with the microscope, and enormous strides in understanding the cosmos were made with the telescope, the CymaScope opens a new window of opportunity for scientists and lay people alike to study the invisible world of sound and vibration. Since everything in the Universe is based on frequencies of vibration, the CymaScope may prove to be one of the most powerful new instruments to emerge for decades.”

Potential applications for this new device include helping autistic and deaf children to learn to speak, musicology, ornithology, zoology, cosmology, physics and art.

Ancient Mysteries, Egypt and Cymatics...

I recently discovered two fascinating audio clips with John Stuart Reid, author of Egyptian Sonics.

Cymatics and Ancient Egypt have fascinated John, inventor and developer of the CymaScope, an innovative 21st century sonic instrument. Working in his lab in the Lake District of England and traveling to Egypt and the Great Pyramids, he has studied sound and the effect of tones to create geometric patterns resembling everything from hieroglyphs, mandalas, crop circles and sacred geometry shapes. Listen as John shares his experience on a trip to Egypt to research the influence of sound within the Great Pyramids. Among other discoveries, when he toned within the kings chamber, he created glyphs on a sarcophagus that mimicked ancient Egyptian symbols.

These two audio interviews are a fascinating introduction to the possibility that the ancient pharoahs knew more about the power of sound than we are aware.

Cymatic Acoustic Experiments

A history of the science of "cymatics" and how it makes visible the patterns created by sound. He also describes his Great Pyramid experiment in which hieroglyphic patterns emerged in particles of sand vibrated by sound.
http://www.lauralee.com/index.cgi?search=John%20Reid

Acoustic Experiments in the Great Pyramid
John describes his experiments, performed in the Great Pyramid, finding the prime frequency of the chamber nearly identical to the sarcophagus. His cymatics tests revealed hieroglyphic-like shapes appearing in a vibrating membrane stretched across the sarcophagus.

For a glimpse into the fascinating world of ancient Egyptian sonics locked into the quartz crystal matrix of the granite sarcophagus see the book "Egyptian Sonics" by John Stuart Reid.

What Exactly is Cymatics?

Cymatics: the study of visual sound patterns.
The term cymatics was coined by the Swiss scientist Hans Jenny, it is derived from the Greek "kyma" ("κύμα") meaning “undulating” or "wave."

Glyph: A symbol or pattern, it is derived from hieroglyph.

CymaGlyph: Words and sounds create sonic patterns. The word CymaGlyph was coined by John Stuart Reid to describe a sound pattern made visible by the CymaScope™, a 21st century sonic instrument invented and developed by John.

The picture above shows several photographs of CymaGlyphs as they emerged on the CymaScope.

Stay tuned for an article by John Stuart Reid as he introduces his groundbreaking premise that sound waves can actually be reinterpreted as a holographic sound bubble.

Guru Wisdom

Ancient Chinese and Indian medicine both are advocates of unblocking and releasing energy disturbances inside and outside the body in order to alleviate the symptoms of disease. Application of Tuning Fork sound therapy can act as a tool to bring about changes on all levels of this Energy system producing a remarkable healing effect as a result.

Our Acu-Sound and Chakra-Sound tuning forks operate between 50 and 5,000 cycles per second and it has been seen that this range of sound energy has the ability to affect paralysed muscles and stimulate movement. It can also affect brainwave patterns, reduce pain and blood pressure and can revitalise the endocrine glands and the immune system to name but a few examples. Studies have shown that sound energy affects the trinity relationship of the bio-chemical, bio-logical and bio-energetic elements of the physical body.

Please visit our website for more information on Tuning Forks.

Have you ever seen sound?

The secret world of sound has been invisible throughout history, until now.

I saw sound when I attended the Cymatherapy Conference last November in Atlanta. It was an amazing and surprisingly moving experience to hear a piece of music and see the beautiful geometric forms each note created. It brought tears to my eyes.

Now visitors to the Explora! Museum in Albuquerque will be able to see sound, from their own voice patterns to bird song, whale song, wild animals and also music. This special magic is available with the exciting new scientific instrument, CymaScope, unveiled January 19, 2007 at the “Shapes of Sounds” exhibit. For the first time, everybody, not just scientists and specialized researchers, can see bird song, whale song, music, and speech. Each sound creates its own harmonic, geometric pattern. Just as great advances in medical science were made with the microscope, and enormous strides in understanding the cosmos were made with the telescope, the CymaScope now allows for incredible advances in the connective links of brain and sound. The brain is wired to perceive sound, but when you can also see the visual result of those sounds, the brain is most effective in making new discoveries.

John S. Reid, who lives in the Lake District of England, is the inventor and developer of the CymaScope, a 21st century electro-acoustics device, inspired by the work of Ernst Chladni, Margaret Watts-Hughes and Hans Jenny. John has taken their work to a new level and is researching how sound creates form through vocal sound, natural sound, music, sacred language and how sound is influenced by sacred space. John has done research on Egyptian Sonics at the Great Pyramid of Giza and has published a booklet of his findings.

If you are in Albuquerque and you want to see what your voice looks like, go to the Explora!
By the way, the image at the top of this article is the cymaglyph of a robin's song.

We are all just fine thanks....

Yes Virginia, they even have storms in paradise . . . .
As many of you have heard, we had a fairly severe storm here last week. We were without power for nearly 24 hours, but no one was hurt from our team.

Sadly we lost some beautiful pine trees from around the lake, but they will recover over time.

Thank you for your love and concern, from all of us here . . . . .

The Difference Between "Curing" and "Healing"

I often get asked questions that indicate to me that many people are not aware of the difference between "curing" and "healing".

So let us, just briefly, look at the difference between healing and curing:

Curing is an end product or finite result. Dictionary definitions define it as “the complete biological resolution of a diseased state” or “ the elimination of disease, distress, evil”.

Healing is a Process and infinite in nature. Some definitions include: “the making or becoming whole, the mending of a breach”, “to free from grief , troubles, evil”, “ restoring to health or soundness”.

Looking at it in the borader sense, to be healed spiritually with respect to an issue is to become whole with that issue. For example, it may involve a cure but it may also mean being at peace with the fact that there is no cure.

Music is The Result of Mixing Frequencies...

When an opera singer vibrates a glass with their voice, they have matched the resonant frequency of the glass. As the singer increases the volume of their sound, the resonance becomes too great for the forces that hold the glass together and it shatters. Modern medicine now uses sound waves to break up kidney stones and gallstones.

Every organ, every bone, every cell in the body has its own resonant frequency. Together they make up a composite frequency like the instruments of an orchestra. When one organ in the body is out of tune it will affect the whole body.

Through sound healing it may be possible to bring the diseased organ into harmony with the rest of the body, hence avoiding the need for drugs or surgery.

The Basics of Sound Healing

By Vera Gadman

Have you ever been to a live concert or any type of performance and felt totally invigorated, or maybe even inspired, during and after the performance? Have you ever heard some music that aggravates you or maybe even angers you and makes you feel tense?

How do you feel when you hear your favourite singer? Or how do you feel when you hear one of your favourite songs with your favourite lyrics? It’s just a wonderful feeling isn’t it? That’s because there is a congruency that you feel when you identify with the words and listen to the music.

Well then, why do we get so aggravated when we hear the same song performed in a way we strongly dislike? It’s usually the tone or the melody, or both, that are different.

That is, it is the sound that is different. The words are the same.

Sound is a frequency.

Sound is a frequency, or a combination of frequencies. The application of sound frequencies to the mind/body of a person results in a reaction within us that subconsciously translates to how we feel about receiving those frequencies (that is, how we feel about the music we hear).

Sound, including music, can take many forms, and each of these forms has a different effect on us. It can arouse or amuse us, invigorate or calm us. It can even call us to arms, inspire us and lift up our spirits.

This is why we like one type of music over another type of music. And it is why somebody may not like what we like.

So What Is Sound Healing?

Sound Healing then, is the therapeutic application of sound frequencies directed to a person with the specific intention of bringing them into a congruent state of harmony and health.

Every cell in the body has its own frequency. Cells make up the organs of the body. When one organ is sick or diseased (out of tune) the entire body is affected.

There is evidence that sound has been used as a healing force for thousands of years. All ancient civilisations used sound for healing. There are many traditional cultures still surviving today that understand the remarkable healing power resulting from sound.

David in the Bible, Egyptian papyri, the Ancient Greeks, Alexander the Great and Pythagoras all used special songs and incantations, with particular melodies and rhythms, to cure diseases of the body and mind.

As other articles of mine address the many issues of scientific research and the understanding of resonance, I will not elaborate on that here, however it is interesting to note that sound is currently used in a vast range of medical circumstances:

  • Modern medicine now uses sound to break up kidney stones and gall stones.
  • Music is now used to reduce the pain and anxiety of patients undergoing dental treatment and surgical operations.
  • The foetus reacts to Mozart and Vivaldi by steadying its heart rate and its kicking declined. Rock music made them kick violently.
  • Slow tempo music slows our breathing rate.
  • Mothers sing a lullaby to their child, and the child feels the love in the mothers voice and goes to sleep.
  • Music therapists work in a variety of clinical settings. The following is a sample of where you might find a music therapist:
  • Hospitals
  • Day treatment programs
  • Community programs
  • Correctional Centres
  • Long term care centres
  • Substance abuse and addictions centres
  • Schools
  • Hospices
  • Private Practice

There is a wide range of sound healing techniques and instruments to treat all conditions. Many of these are in existence because of the work of some extraordinary individuals such as Ernest Chladni, Hans Jenny, Fabien Maman, Don Campbell, Dr. Alfred Tomatis and others, that spent decades researching the effects of sound.

It is thanks to their work and dedication that we are able to use sound, and revolutionary sound equipment to the benefit of our total wellbeing.

Sound Healing Has Been Around For a While.....

Sound has been used as a healing force for thousands of years. All ancient civilizations used sound for healing. Traditional cultures still surviving today understand the remarkable healing power that lies in sound.

In the Bible we are told that David played his harp to lift King Saul's depression. Egyptian papyri over 2,600 years old refer to incantations as cures for infertility and rheumatic pain.

The ancient Greeks believed music had the power to heal body and soul. They used the flute and the lyre for treating illnesses such as gout and sciatica. It is reported that Alexander the Great's sanity was restored by music played on the lyre. There is an ancient Greek saying, "Men have song as a physician for pain".

Pythagoras used special songs and incantations with particular melodies and rhythms, to cure diseases of the body and mind.

Instructions for Life

Here are a few great thoughts to start the New Year in 2007 before we get back into the work thing!!

Maybe you might like to make up your own list, or even make up a list such as "Instructions for Health' or "Instructions for Wellbeing" which I will be sharing with you soon in future blog posts.

Now here we go, my 'Instructions For Life' are:

1. Take into account that great love and great achievements involve great risk.

2. When you lose, don't lose the lesson.

3. Follow the three R's:

Respect for self

Respect for others

Responsibility for all your actions

4. Remember that not getting what you want is sometimes a wonderful stroke of luck.

5. Learn the rules so you know how to break them properly.

6. Don't let a little dispute injure a great relationship.

7. When you realize you've made a mistake, take immediate steps to correct it.

8. Spend some time alone every day.

9. Open arms to change, but don't let go of your values.

10. Remember that sometimes silence is the best answer.

11. Live a good, honourable life. Then when you get older and think back, you'll be able to enjoy it a second time.

12. A loving atmosphere in your home is the foundation for your life.

13. In disagreements with loved ones, deal only with the current situation. Don't bring up the past.

14. Share your knowledge. It's the only way to achieve immortality.

15. Be gentle with the earth.

16. Once a year, go someplace you've never been before.

17. Remember that the best relationship is one which your love for each other exceeds your need for each other.

18. Judge your success by what you had to give up in order to get it.

19. Approach love and cooking with the same reckless abandon.

20. A smile adds more beauty than any plastic surgery.

What things can you add to make a difference?
